Inception of The Sona Group

The Sona Group is a premier business group in India, the origins of which trace back to India’s pre-independence era. Our beloved leader Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagaraja Chettiar is the founder of The Sona Group. During his study on the life and works of the tea plantation workers, he was moved by their bitter plight and was determined to improve their conditions.

1921 - Mahatma Gandhi Interacting with
other Indian Leaders & Philanthropists

Our founder did with tea plantations workers what our Father of Nation Mahatma Gandhi did with the mining workers in South Africa and the two men formed a lasting friendship. It was in 1921 in Kalaithanthai’s house that the famous loin cloth incident took place (where Mahatma Gandhi removed his shirt, never to wear one again).

1923 - Valliappa Textiles

The multi-million dollar organization – The Sona Group – started with the Valliappa Textiles. Being a pioneer in the textile industry, the company has showcased self-reliance over the past 6 decades towards sustaining in this highly competitive and dynamic industry. Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajan Chettiar, a sensitive philanthropist and activist, founded Valliappa Textiles.

Inception of Thiagarajar Polytechnic College

Incepted in the year 1958, Thiagarajar Polytechnic College is a premier institution founded by Sri. Kalaithanthai Karumuttu Thiagarajaran Chettiar and developed by Sri. M. S. Chockalingam. Providing world-class technical education for the past 6 decades, the college is located in a serene campus and is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Unveiling of Pachaiyappa Mudaliar Statue at Ekambareswarar Temple - 5th Jan, 1963

C. Valliappa welcomes chief guest for a function at the Ekambareswarar temple in Chennai. The life-size statue of Pachaiyappa Mudaliar was unveiled at this function. Pachaiyappa Mudaliar’s statue was unveiled by honorable Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on 5th Jan, 1963. Pachiayappa’s Trust Board members see as Dr. Radhakrishnan unveils the statue.

1984 - Inauguration of the First IT Company in India - Texas Instruments

Sona Towers, undoubtedly an ultimate reflection of a chic urban corporate building with thoughtfully designed infrastructure, was established to get India on the global IT road map. It was here that India’s first IT company – Texas Instruments – began its journey in the year 1984.

1991 - Canada India Institutional Cooperation Project (CIICP)

Canada India Institutional Cooperation Project (CIICP) is a major Human Resource Development Project launched in the year 1991 through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the Govt. of Canada and the Govt. of India.

1992 - Athletic Sports Meet

Athletic Sports Meet was organized in Feb, 1992 as a tribute to the athletic accomplishments. The event saw Mrs. and Mr. C. Valliappa preceding as the crowd roared. C. Valliappa spoke a few valuable words addressing the crowd gathered there.

1997 - Sona College of Technology

Offering Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree and Doctoral degree in engineering, Sona College of Technology was established in the year 1997. Being an ISO certified institution, Sona College of Technology is known for its high values and rich tradition bestowed by its Founder and Chairman, M. S. Chockalingam.
